Beginning January 1, 2024, many entities—such as corporations, LLCs, and others created through state filings—will need to submit certain information to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN). If you’re unsure whether your business qualifies for an exemption, it’s a good idea to consult legal counsel, as we aren’t able to provide legal advice.
Who Needs to File?
If your entity was in existence before January 1, 2024, you need to file your information by the end of 2024. The penalties for not doing so can be significant, so it’s important to check whether this applies to your business. For your convenience, we’ve included a link for the summary sheet that outlines the type of information required below.
Filing with FinCEN: A DIY Approach
FinCEN has designed the reporting process to be user-friendly. The FinCEN website offers videos, step-by-step guides, and other helpful resources to walk business owners through the filing process. Begin on the FinCEN website. https://www.fincen.gov/
If you’re comfortable handling it yourself, the website should provide everything you need to complete the process.
